Exercise
Which form of physical exercise?
Encourage your client to list in their journal any physical exercise that appeals to them. A selection of options could include walking, jogging, step classes, cycling, weights, sit ups, push ups, ball games, Pilates, yoga, treadmill, swimming, tennis, golf, self-defence, boxing, kick boxing, martial arts, tai chi, riding, gardening or dancing. Ask your client to highlight those that appeal to them and which they would like to experiment with. Encourage them to make a commitment to try one at a time and be mindful of which is best for them. It is worth getting them to try out some slow, gentle exercise as well as some fast, high-paced exercise to see how they feel both during and afterwards.
Before your client decides, check with them how realistic the chosen physical exercise is. How much time can they realistically commit in terms of the frequency and duration of the physical exercise? It is also important to consider any financial costs such as class fees, gym membership and ease of access to the location. They will also need to consider whether they prefer outdoor or indoor activities, or prefer to exercise at home.
If your client is socially isolated they might consider pursuing group activities or team sports, or finding an ‘exercise buddy’ to keep them motivated. When they have tried a few alternatives settle on those that have been the most effective and that they can realistically manage. Remember you want them to reduce stress rather than increase it! Finally, it might help initially to use a reward system every time they take exercise to sustain their level of motivation. For example, they could put some money into a box every time they exercise.
